The members of the Social Media Club of Kansas City are truly engaged citizens; they were active in September’s Google Fiber pre-registration activities. By working the phones and canvassing residents they helped ensure that several “fiberhoods” on Kansas City’s East side had enough signups to qualify for fiber installations. As a result several schools, libraries and other public buildings will be receiving fiber at no charge.
These donated PCs will further those efforts. Connecting for Good’s digital literacy program is intended to help even more low income residents gain access to Google’s offer of seven years of Internet access for $300 (payable in 12 monthly installments).
The Social Media Club’s primary mission is to expand digital media literacy, promote standard technologies, encourage ethical behavior and share best practices. They bring together journalists, publishers, communications professionals, artists, amateur media creators, citizen journalists, teachers, students, tool makers, and other interested collaborators. Essentially they are the people who create and consume social media and have an interest in seeing the ‘media industry’ evolve for everyone’s benefit.
